SA - Where the Earth Sings in Eleven Languages

If Africa were a song, South Africa would be the chorus - bold, unshakable, and unforgettable. Personally, I normally prefer to describe it as a land where cinematic visual stories unfold, where the coastline oceans wrestle in Cape Town, the famous savannahs roar with lions, townships pulse with Amapiano beats, and a people’s authentic cultural narratives echo all over the world through mountains, past seas and oceans, and across memories.

Through Oh, See Africa, we are able to tell the story that South Africa isn’t just a destination - it’s a feeling, captured #ThroughEveryLens. This is where creators who tell their stories meet the heartbeat of a nation, inviting you to see, hear, and feel the real, rare, and raw South African experience that makes this country a universe of its own.

The Rainbow Nation

South Africa’s nickname, “Rainbow Nation”, comes from its 11 official languages (Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, English, Setswana, Sesotho, Sepedi, Xitsonga, Swati, Tshivenda, and Ndebele). Each language carries centuries of history, from the rhythmic clicks of Xhosa to the poetic flow of Afrikaans, creating a melody that resonates across most parts of the world. “Sawubona” (Zulu - I see you), “Molo” (Xhosa - hello), “Dumela” (Setswana - a greeting that feels like home). In recent times, South Africa has been amplifying its indigenous creative perspectives by partnering with initiatives like the Pan South African Language Board, which promotes local languages in digital spaces and ensures these voices shine even brighter in culture-first media brand narratives. #OhSeeStories celebrates this linguistic diversity by inviting African content creators to share their stories so that the world can see Africa through their lens.

Wild Writes the Rules

The landscapes in South Africa are masterpieces of cinematic visual stories that should definitely be part of your bucket list as a travel destination. In one of the largest parks in Africa, Kruger National Park, the Big Five (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo) roam with regal authority. In 2025, Kruger’s conservation measures have been put in place to ensure that the wildlife are fully protected and secure from poachers. But the magic and beauty of South Africa extend beyond the savannah.

  • Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is where African penguins waddle like locals. The penguin numbers are in the millions, making it a hotspot for authentic travel storytelling.
  • The Drakensberg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site normally referred to as the “Cradle of Mankind,” offer trails past ancient San rock art and peaks that pierce the sky - ideal for storytelling for tourists and content creators.
  • Table Mountain in Cape Town is more than a view; it's a pilgrimage. Here, people can hike or use a cable car to make the experience even more memorable.

Where Resilience Meets Rhythm

To know the real, authentic South Africa, one must feel and experience its townships - Soweto, Khayelitsha, Alexandra, and Joburg - where authentic cultural narratives pulse with life. In Soweto, Vilakazi Street, once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, buzzes with street vendors, jazz, and murals that scream of culture.

South Africa's music is a revolution. Amapiano, South Africa’s global sensation, dominates charts with artists like Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, Uncle Waffles, and Tyla, to name just a few. Their amazing music depicts South Africa's culture. Most of these Amapiano songs can be found on Instagram reels and TikTok, used in storytelling by content creators.

Art found on township walls serves as a canvas for indigenous, authentic South African creative perspectives, with murals tackling climate change and equality. One of the famous streets - Maboneng Street - rivals global art hubs by showcasing its murals, allowing content creators to tell their stories using these artistic backgrounds.

In the streets of Soweto, you will see entrepreneurs who have become extremely creative, turning containers into cafes and stacking them to minimize space and setup costs - which, in my view, is quite innovative and creative.

Culture, Color, Sound, and Flavor

South Africa’s culture is a kaleidoscope of true visual heritage, where every flavor, rhythm, and tradition tells a story. Through Oh, See Flavors, we have you covered and make sure you experience the true, authentic South Africa. When it comes to flavors, we have:

  • Bunny chow - a curry-stuffed bread loaf born from Indian-South African roots, usually served with a salad on the side.
  • Braai (Grilled Meat/Barbecue) - South Africa’s sacred barbecue, where boerewors sizzle and strangers become family. For the meat lovers, I guarantee that the braai in South Africa is unmatched - although this is up for debate.

South Africans embody their culture through rituals and traditions in film, from Shweshwe fabric (a South African fabric brand) dresses on Cape Town runways to Ndebele-inspired sneakers designed by township youth. #CultureInMotion celebrates this bold style.

Innovation and Grit

South Africa is a crucible of ingenuity. From the world’s first successful heart transplant in 1967 to today’s cutting-edge renewable energy projects, the nation pushes boundaries. In townships, entrepreneurs repurpose shipping containers into vibrant shops and cafes. In tech hubs like Cape Town’s Silicon Cape, startups are tackling everything from fintech to climate solutions. South Africa’s challenges - inequality and unemployment - fuel its drive to innovate and rebuild.  South Africans don’t wait for change; they create it, with a hustle that fuels culture-driven brand strategy. #CreateWithPurpose aims to capture this energy.

A Nation Forged in Fire

South Africa’s story is one of triumph over adversity. The scars of apartheid, economic divides, and social challenges remain, but so does an unyielding spirit. From the Soweto Uprising of 1976 to today’s youth-led climate marches, South Africans confront struggles with courage. Community projects, such as urban gardens in Khayelitsha or art collectives in Alexandra, show a nation that builds through collaboration. This is a country that dances through pain and sings through triumphs - a story still being written by its people.

Come, Live the Story

South Africa is a journey, not a checklist. It’s the roar of a lion at dawn in Kruger National Park, the clink of wine glasses in Franschhoek, and the rhythm of Amapiano spilling from a Soweto shebeen (local pub). It’s the laughter of children playing soccer on a dusty township street, the scent of curry in Durban’s markets, and the silence of a Karoo night. Come taste the Bunny Chow, climb Table Mountain, dance to Gqom, and let South Africa’s soul move you. South Africa is a land that doesn’t just welcome you - it transforms you.
